看了英译者序和part3的导言，本书德文原版1966年出版，对当时德国哲学界盛行的“现代性就是基督教义的世俗化版本”（以洛维特为代表）的抨击，对现代的正当性问题作出论述。在作者看来，现代性的核心精神在于possible progress和self-assertion，尤其要将前者和inevitable Progress区分开来，此外还有自我保全、对自然的机械主义理解、马克思主义的弥赛亚式期许、现代国家原则和现代理性主义的政治原则之间的冲突。现代性和基督教的关系在于，它是在基督教无法人们提供对世界的整全解释时出现的，回应了基督教的困境，因为其内涵和基督教截然不同，但是延续性又表现在，它试图回应的questions和基督教相同，它reoccupy了基督教义之前的位置。
