标题一语双关，End即是「终结」，也是「目标」。1996年，Neil Postman讨论的不是「怎么教」，而是「教什么」。且他所关心的教什么不是知识、技能、工具层面，而是教育的终极目的，并称之为「叙事」（narrative），一套全民认同的公共叙事。这一职能过去由宗教承担，第一部分将其扩展，「神祇的必要性」、「失败了的神祇」、「失败了的新神祇」和「或许能成功的神祇」。共产主义、纳粹主义、法西斯主义被他归入「失败了的神祇」。后两者没有疑议，第一个有待商榷，福山也承认「历史的终结」推迟了。信息技术，被他归入「失败了的新神祇」，则在过去二十年里完全没有失败。第二部分，Postman提出了五种公共叙事的可能：地球飞船、堕落天使、美国实验、多样性法则、语言编制者/世界构造者。最后一点颇为有趣。
