Kroncke此书的标题其实相当直白地道出了他的核心观点——美国法向中国的输出注定是一场“徒劳”（futility)。科氏认为，世俗化的传教精神构成了美国法向外输出的根本动力，但其本质上则只是带有普世面孔（universalism）的美利坚式偏狭（parochialism）而已。理论层面一边对话law and development运动，另一边接续Michel Hunt, Paul Varg等人的美国对华外交史框架，但更多还是在史料层面丰富了近代中美法律关系史。古德诺与庞德两篇个案颇为扎实。
