These women worked to advance gender and class equality in the early People’s Republic and fought to transform sexist norms and practices, all while facing fierce opposition from a male-dominated CCP leadership from the Party Central to the local government. Wang Zheng extends this investigation to the cultural realm, showing how feminists within China’s film industry were working to actively create new cinematic heroines, and how they continued a New Culture anti-patriarchy heritage in socialist film production. This book illuminates not only the different visions of revolutionary transformation but also the dense entanglements among those in the top echelon of the party. Wang discusses the causes for failure of China’s socialist revolution and raises fundamental questions about male dominance in social movements that aim to pursue social justice and equality. This is the first book engendering the PRC high politics and has important theoretical and methodological implications for scholars and students working in gender studies as well China studies.

王政老师非常详实地重构了共产主义女权历史，早年中华全国妇女联合会与CCP之间的“政治话语”斗争很有意思，如何认识女性在共产主义革命中做出的贡献，中段我和要单挑上海妇女联合会这一点不懂？之后写陈波儿、夏衍的两章电影创作还不错，但是对于铁姑娘的讨论以及文革之后女权史被扭曲掩盖有些刻意回避。结尾强行提了一波女权五姐妹。Chris

建国后妇女史的重塑：一方面是被遮蔽的妇女斗争史——妇联与《中国妇女》以Maoist阶级斗争的术语（“封建思想”）争夺阵地的努力与失败（66年后）；一方面是以电影为核心所展开的文化生产史的重新书写，勇敢、无私的女英雄形象（《烈火中永生》江姐）所推动的社会主义女性形象转变与JiangQing及她建构于男性思维、权力结构之上的舞台化的女性形象，在妇女形象“男性化”的批判中伴随“反封建”话语的压抑而黯然退场，转而成为资本主义现代性所悦纳的“real femininity”与公共话语中的性别差异，诸如“大寨铁姑娘”的形象亦雨打风吹去。于是指向逐渐清晰——女性革命不能成为任何以人类尊严或社会正义之名的运动的附庸，必须有意识地进行对男性统治的批判与系统改造，否则终将以不平等性别关系与男性统治的再生产告终。
