未来当是大分流研究的经典之作。与加州学派以及黄宗智等人的研究相比，泰苏老师重新引入了“文化”的因素（reculturalizing）；但又避免了像韦伯一样将文化的概念泛化，而是将文化的讨论局限在典权/抵押这个可操作层面。具体而言，宋代以降宗族伦理的内化使得中国的典权制度（习惯上允许无限期回赎）相较英国的土地抵押制度（一年赎回）对穷人更加友好（因为穷人可能享有较高的宗族地位，而英国的社会地位则直接与财富挂钩），进而减缓了中国的土地积累过程与农业资本主义（agricultural capitalism）的发展，最终导致了大分流。在方法论层面，本书也有助于我们思考社会规范（social norm）对个体理性选择的影响及其限度。【逻辑清晰之至，但又不带一种方法论上的骄傲，真是历史学社科研究之典范】
