情節織體和情感復雜性上和之前的帕慕剋相差很多，像個demo習作，比較失望。

帕慕剋的書一直有強烈寓言色彩，小說感強的《我的名字叫紅》和《純真博物館》不過是作者用大量的年代細節掩飾瞭寓言的本質。這本書迴歸帕慕剋早期風格，隻披瞭一層薄薄的小說的皮，假裝有人物和情節。作者的主要注意力在把史詩放進小說這個無限延展的體裁裏，並且把東西方史詩放在一起。作為傳統小說看，這本書不值一讀；但如果能認同帕慕剋的試驗，這本書結構精巧，隱喻疊加得繁復而有序，蠻有意思的。

Tender, delicate and full of metaphor. 帕慕剋的故事令人著迷。圍繞一個母題展開的小說很容易因過度的關聯而顯得拙劣做作，然而帕慕剋卻能做到如此的精緻且自然。正如一位讀者試圖讓他解釋其中的一個段落時他所迴答的一樣：“無須解釋，文字所寫即我所思。”
