B.威廉姆斯（1929-2003），二十世紀英國著名哲學傢。曾先後任教於劍橋大學哲學係和美國加州大學伯剋利分校。他以其在倫理學、古典學、知識論以及對於哲學一般問題的係統反思而著名。代錶作有《個人問題》《道德運氣》《倫理學與哲學的限度》《羞恥與必然性》《真與真實》《泰初有為》等。

陳嘉映，首都師範大學教授，長期從事哲學研究與翻譯工作。他從十年前就可以帶領學生閱讀和翻譯本書，以及威廉斯的其他著作。

By the time of his death in 2003, Bernard Williams was one of the greatest philosophers of his generation. He taught at the Universities of Cambridge, Berkeley and Oxford. 去年第一次讀瞭三章扔下棄療，再次讀卡在瞭七八兩章，缺少語言哲學和知識論背景讀起來非常吃力，無法跟上Williams的論證節奏。其它內容（“大概”能看懂的）很精彩。最可貴的是Williams從沒有試圖簡化問題，或是用所謂的理論強奸生活，而是呈現齣道德思慮的多種可能，自己傳統模型的睏境和結構的局限。

這本書的邏輯推理非常棒！！在膜的同時我隻能說威廉斯的方式非常英國，他的道德哲學雖“無道德”但是有情感和智性。（還得重讀٩͡[๏̯͡๏]۶
