1973-74年的Gifford講座。是19世紀宗教思想概述一類書中的佼佼者，時限為下半葉，範圍是英法德。作者持特定宗教立場，所以是有態度的撮述，對於當時流行的思潮，比如自由主義、馬剋思和工人階級無神論等，既有清楚的綜述，也有挑釁性的評論。與論述的話題有比較公開的角力，不同於更客觀（= liberal）的著作。前五章很好，差不多每頁都浸透著學識，外帶作者或明或暗的評斷。6-10章，尤其討論科學與宗教之後，力道明顯減弱，或許因為自成一體的話題剩不下多少瞭，或許因為前2/3太強之故（嚴重懷疑講座的主體是2-5章）。視野寬廣，除英國外，對法國格外熟悉，尤其伏爾泰和19世紀的Michelet/Renan/Taine等人。感覺歐文比亨利更廣博，英文寫得更靈動一些。
