Pippin explains why this chapter of Hegel's Phenomenology should be seen as the basis of much later continental philosophy and the Marxist, neo-Marxist, and critical-theory traditions. He also contrasts his own interpretation of Hegel's assertions with influential interpretations of the chapter put forward by philosophers John McDowell and Robert Brandom.

薄薄的一本小书，由两篇论文组成。黑格尔在自我意识章开篇提出：自我意识和它自身的统一必须成为自我意识的本质。皮平认为这个论断包含两个命题：（1）自我意识就是欲望一般；（2）自我意识只有在一个另外的自我意识里才得到它的满足。两个章节的安排分别对应对这两个命题的阐释，同时也分别回应了约翰·麦克道威尔和罗伯特·布兰顿。皮平的核心主张是，我们不能在知识论的意义上将自我意识视为可加对象化的本质，一个两阶段的认知过程；自我意识就是欲望一般，它在动物生命那里表现为最低限度的原-意向性意识，而在人类这里体现为提出一个合理的论断并将它实现出来；而另外一个自我意识就是该论断得以辩护和实现的条件，它从极端的状态——生死斗争开始，以一个真正相互承认的社会的达成为目标。
