Julian Patrick Barnes is a contemporary English writer of postmodernism in literature. He has been shortlisted three times for the Man Booker Prize--- Flaubert's Parrot (1984), England, England (1998), and Arthur & George (2005), and won the prize for The Sense of an Ending (2011). He has written crime fiction under the pseudonym Dan Kavanagh.

Following an education at the City of London School and Merton College, Oxford, he worked as a lexicographer for the Oxford English Dictionary. Subsequently, he worked as a literary editor and film critic. He now writes full-time. His brother, Jonathan Barnes, is a philosopher specialized in Ancient Philosophy.

He lived in London with his wife, the literary agent Pat Kavanagh, until her death on 20 October 2008.

某些時刻，字裏行間以為見到王小波在英倫。故事情節扣人心弦之餘，毫無意外地散發齣大不列顛重口味。多麼狡黠的一本書。

以Tony為視角的敘事主要是在探討時間因為記憶，或者“曆史”，形成的迴潮（也就是後來說的nolstalgia），以及這種迴潮發掘齣來的悲劇與救贖，作者覺得根源還是unrest。但是Adrian那邊書裏隻說瞭冰山一角。

他和天纔以前是同學，屬經常在一起討論哲學問題。他上學時談個女朋友。在分手時有瞭第一次。天纔上瞭劍橋。女朋友甩瞭主人公，跟瞭天纔。天纔自殺瞭。主人公平庸地結婚、生子、離婚，到瞭六十多歲，成瞭一個禿頭老爺子。他和前妻不時見麵，計劃著旅行，但從沒有實施。前妻是個明確的人，而前女友是個謎一般的人。一天，一個福特夫人給瞭他五百美金的遺贈，並說要把天纔的日記交給他。他不認識這個福特夫人。後來纔發現是前女友的媽媽。他想拿到天纔的日記。死纏爛打地嚮前女友發郵件。但前女友迴復都很粗略。最後寄迴天纔日記一頁的照片，另外一個是主人公年輕時罵他們的信件。他繼續死纏爛打，約瞭前女友兩次。四十年沒見。但每次見麵她都很冷淡、憤懣。尤其是第二次見到路上由人看護的幾個人後。他後來猜到，她和天纔有一個兒子。而這是
