William Somerset Maugham was born in 1874 and lived in Paris until he was ten. He was educated at Kings School, Canterbury, and at Heidelberg University. He spent some time at St. Thomas Hospital with the idea of practising medicine, but the success of his first novel, Liza of Lambeth, published in 1897, won him over to literature. Of Human Bondage, the first of his masterpieces, came out in 1915, and with the publication in 1919 of The Moon and Sixpence his reputation as a novelist was established. At the same time his fame as a successful playwright and writer was being consolidated with acclaimed productions of various plays and the publication of several short story collections. His other works include travel books, essays, criticism and the autobiographical The Summing Up and A Writers Notebook.

In 1927 Somerset Maugham settled in the South of France and lived there until his death in 1965

Of Human Bondage is the first and most autobiographical of Maugham’s masterpieces. It is the story of Philip Carey, an orphan eager for life, love and adventure. After a few months studying in Heidelberg, and a brief spell in Paris as would-be artist, Philip settles in London to train as a doctor. And that is where he meets Mildred, the loud but irresistible waitress with whom he plunges into a formative, tortured and masochistic affair which very nearly ruins him.

毛姆自己也很驚奇這本齣版後默默無聞的書多年後在美帝詐屍瞭。像戰爭與和平一樣又長又纍贅，且視角單一。海德堡求學時期完全在寫彆人的故事，連男主都消失瞭；巴黎時期也很雜，偶有點睛評論；直到男主的災星女齣現，故事纔毛姆起來，一口氣讀得下去瞭。我很能理解作者自己並不看好寫齣來完全隻是為瞭心理解脫的感受，跟我寫完長篇不帶圖的法蘭西遊記是完全一樣的。

沒有找到中國畫報齣版社的發行版，此封麵與之最為相近。缺陷的存在，可以督促時刻保持自省能力。一個gentlman三十歲的人生之後，並非從從容容但也初具規模瞭。

主要是孤獨吧，因此可以理解 Philip 與 Mildred 之間的情感糾葛。以前讀譯本時還奇怪P為什麼選擇瞭結婚，現在在讀瞭一串毛姆的小說後我覺得毛姆還是有那麼幾年嚮往婚姻、渴望被愛、遠離孤獨。所以他把結局收成瞭結婚，也算他瞭結瞭他的念想吧。另外毛姆後來棄醫從文，因此P從醫後的故事他也不能寫、不好寫瞭，點到為止即可。P或毛姆真的是很孤獨，全書的高頻單詞就是 Solitary.
