Kenneth Dean (Ph.D. Stanford 1988) is Lee Chair and James McGill Professor of Chinese at McGill University. His publications include Taoist ritual and popular cults of Southeast China (Princeton, 1992) and Lord of the Three in One (Princeton, 1998).
Making ingenious use of a wide variety of sources, and old as well as modern technical resources, Kenneth Dean and Zheng Zhenman here set a new standard for an histoire totale for a coherently well-defined cultural region in China. At the same time it deals in-depth with the ongoing negotiation of modernity in Chinese village rituals.

鄭振滿和丁荷生通過對福建莆田江口平原水利製度的研究,展示瞭以“七境”為代錶的神廟係統與祭典組織如何影響明清時期莆田平原區域社會的建構。唐宋時期,福建地區開始進入王朝的教化體係,民間諸神崇拜逐漸與道教相結閤,包括吳真人在內的地方神明逐漸轉變為被王朝敕封的正統神明。明初福建雖同樣經曆裏社祭祀的推廣與“毀淫祠”活動,但福建一帶不少曾獲得王朝敕封的神廟卻得以保留下來,並與裏社閤二為一。明中葉以後,當地水利灌溉的係統化、復雜化為明初裏社製度基礎上所形成的“七境”神廟祭祀組織的興起創造瞭條件,最終形成瞭以神廟祭典為核心的莆田地方社會。無論是珠江三角洲地區的宗族,還是莆田的地方神崇拜,這種地域差彆很大程度上源於兩地是於不同時期以不同方式被整閤到王朝國傢的統治之中的,由此産生瞭神明與祖先兩種不同的模式與形態
