哲學傢本人作為一個主要人物齣現在瞭書中，使本書中的孤獨、死亡、癡迷、喪失等主題可以得到非常深入的討論，也因此而是一本比《叔本華的治療》更引人思考的好書。尼采用永恒復歸“治愈”瞭Breuer醫生在生活中的意義迷失和對病人的執迷情感，而Breuer不僅幫助尼采剋服瞭對莎樂美的癡迷，也在無意中實踐瞭精神分析的雛形。Yalom的獨特之處在於他能在藉用尼采或叔本華的哲學思想“治愈”某些心理問題之後，又經由更為人本主義的立場實現“反轉”，使得人物意識到或孤獨或厭世的傾嚮之下潛藏的對於友誼、同伴以及人性溫暖之處的嚮往。
