In April 1945, Reader’s Digest published a condensed version of the book, and soon thereafter the Book-of-the-Month Club distributed this edition to more than 600,000 readers. A perennial best seller, the book has sold 400,000 copies in the United States alone and has been translated into more than twenty languages, along the way becoming one of the most important and influential books of the century.

With this new edition, The Road to Serfdom takes its place in the series The Collected Works of F. A. Hayek. The volume includes a foreword by series editor and leading Hayek scholar Bruce Caldwell explaining the book's origins and publishing history and assessing common misinterpretations of Hayek's thought. 就像末尾的书评里提到哈耶克自己也说the book is almost exclusively critical not constructive 而且如果想要看干脆有力的论证这本书无疑太重复太啰嗦而一味的重复也会显得片面而降低可信度（即便对于我这样的纯外行）但也会有人把这样的缺点解读为优点 "Hayek has the sincerity of one who has had the vision of a danger which the others have not seen. He warns his fellowmen with loving patience." 在一些国家这样的warning是多么可贵
