Spinoza's Theological-Political Treatise (1670) is one of the most important philosophical works of the early modern period. In it Spinoza discusses at length the historical circumstances of the composition and transmission of the Bible, demonstrating the fallibility of both its authors and its interpreters. He argues that free enquiry is not only consistent with the security and prosperity of a state but actually essential to them, and that such freedom flourishes best in a democratic and republican state in which individuals are left free while religious organizations are subordinated to the secular power. 斯宾诺莎把服从看得高于信仰，顽抗不羁的信奉被贬斥为渎神；切割真理与信仰，否认可以通过信仰来追求真理，真理完全变成了智性上的追求；通过将神与自然相勾连，锻造出了一种双重构造：信仰是属人的事务，是神“迁就”人的理解力不足而设置的，而自然（交给人的普普通通的自然道理、自然现象）恰恰也是神性的体现；窄化启示对人的效力、否定奇迹；对神的服从是一种内在服从，其要旨就是爱人，所以信仰就是爱人，由此导向了一种道德宗教；强调上帝之国只能通过统治者在地上的权力来建立，上帝之国就是仁爱的制度化！在爱人这一由服从神所导出的原则的前提之下，其他的任何意见如何都是私人之事，统治者无权掌管，并且一旦掌管也是对其有害的。斯宾诺莎对统治者的绝对权力不设提防，其理由竟然是这样对统治者有害，太天真了！
