Charles Murray is the W.H. Brady Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute. He first came to national attention in 1984 with his book Losing Ground. He received a bachelor's degree in history from Harvard and a Ph.D. in political science from MIT. He lives with his wife in Burkittsville, Maryland.

穆雷对读者类型的感知十分准确，整个阅读过程都像是在与他对话。除了实用的常见用词分类以外，许多人生建议都很有价值。比如1）找积累型的事业，并不要总想着在年轻的时候就取得成功，因为事业至少是一个四十年的过程，要让经验带来的快感弥补年华老去带来的失落。2）四个影响幸福的重要因素是：家庭、事业、社区、宗教。在每个因素中进行尝试，不要不曾付出努力就缺席。3）试图找一些扩大人生张力的体验，如从军两年或者去一个陌生的国家长途旅行，这样的人的成熟和见解都会比大多数同龄人高出一个水平，而非仅仅被困在中产阶级泡泡里。

几年前打了五颗星，短评“Murray的这本新出版的小书为年轻人提出了从学术到思维到人生的实用建议。例如，在和长者通信时，除非对方要求，不要直呼其名（尽管美国文化中很普遍），而要尊称。这是对的，我吃过亏。”其实不光是对资深学者了，在国内大学做过一次讲座，一个听过讲座的硕士生给我写信咨询出国的事，第一句就是Dude, how r u bro? 讲真，这效果不好。Murry还有许多小建议，比如不说center around而说center on。
