威廉·福特·怀特美国芝加哥学派社会学家，美国艺术和科学研究院院士。1914年生于马萨诸塞州。1943年获芝加哥大学哲学博士学位。自1942年其，曾先后在俄克拉荷马大学，芝加哥大学，康奈尔大学任教。1964年任美国应用人类学协会主席，1977至1978任美国社会学协会主席，并兼任多项职务。1982年曾来华讲学。本书是他的成名之作，也是他最重要的一部著作。

Cannot believe this masterpiece was made almost like a century ago...his defend on methodology and literature is truly amazing. When you can tell a good story with strong narrative, you made it. The appendix is even better than the book!

事实证明附录里的研究方法论比正文还要有趣加有用哈哈，涉及到很多田野研究所会面临的窘迫尴尬和选择无奈，看社会学大牛的回忆录好有意思。很显然我对于意大利贫民窟的社群人员流动、关系网络、组织地位、社会变迁、以至于一整个亚文化都兴趣不大，为数不多有趣的是1混混们利他或利己的行为方式影响他们向上流动 2街角社会与主流社会的脱节导致它们不被接纳和理解。写作非常通顺，多数时候读着更像小说而不是社会学经典了 Chris
