威廉·福特·懷特美國芝加哥學派社會學傢，美國藝術和科學研究院院士。1914年生於馬薩諸塞州。1943年獲芝加哥大學哲學博士學位。自1942年其，曾先後在俄剋拉荷馬大學，芝加哥大學，康奈爾大學任教。1964年任美國應用人類學協會主席，1977至1978任美國社會學協會主席，並兼任多項職務。1982年曾來華講學。本書是他的成名之作，也是他最重要的一部著作。

In a new section on the book's legacy, Whyte responds to recent challenges to the validity, interpretation, and uses of his data. "The Whyte Impact on the Underdog," the moving statement by a gang leader who became the author's first research assistant, is preserved.

事實證明附錄裏的研究方法論比正文還要有趣加有用哈哈，涉及到很多田野研究所會麵臨的窘迫尷尬和選擇無奈，看社會學大牛的迴憶錄好有意思。很顯然我對於意大利貧民窟的社群人員流動、關係網絡、組織地位、社會變遷、以至於一整個亞文化都興趣不大，為數不多有趣的是1混混們利他或利己的行為方式影響他們嚮上流動 2街角社會與主流社會的脫節導緻它們不被接納和理解。寫作非常通順，多數時候讀著更像小說而不是社會學經典瞭 Chris

Cannot believe this masterpiece was made almost like a century ago...his defend on methodology and literature is truly amazing. When you can tell a good story with strong narrative, you made it. The appendix is even better than the book!
