Joseph R. Strayer (1904–87) was the Dayton-Stockton Professor of History Emeritus at Princeton University. His books include The Middle Ages, Western Europe in the Middle Ages, and Feudalism. Charles Tilly (1929–2008) was the Joseph L. Buttenwieser Professor of Social Science at Columbia University. William Chester Jordan is professor of history at Princeton University. He is the author of From England to France: Felony and Exile in the High Middle Ages (Princeton).

Written from the experience of a lifetime of teaching and research in the field, this short, clear book is the classic work on what is known about the early history of the European state. a thin but cogent work

提齣瞭許多重要問題和思考方嚮，也厘清瞭一些往往被混為一談的議題，不過Poggi書齣英文版後或許重要性不再那麼大瞭。尤其是13-14世紀國傢機器完善和15-16世紀短暫崩壞和集權混雜的年代應該分開，官僚機構的建立係於專業化和同君王及地方貴族關係，教會增強國傢能力同時又在與國傢對立中凸顯國傢世俗性等。戰爭的重要性在作者看來不高。值得注意的是Jordan前言裏提到此書上課聽眾和主要群體還是冷戰年代到普林斯頓讀研究生的國務院官員，他們的需求是如何在去殖民化和第三世界地區重建歐洲式國傢，因而作者的思考和論述方法不可避免地也有目的論和治理技術至上的特徵。
