第3、4章。曆史敘述是文字構成的人工製品/文學虛構。一反弗萊將曆史同文學對立起來、並以之為直接的話語演述，懷特強調曆史敘述者編織情節的能力：把事實加以編碼、裁剪，使之坐落於編年記述的順序中，而決定論式/末世論式/啓示錄式敘述的分彆，在於眾多事件中，何者被重點突齣；仰賴曆史學傢和讀者共享的前文類情節結構，方得以將原先被遺忘、忽視、壓抑的事件重新打撈，使本已生疏的變得親切可感；描述一個事件所用的語言，預鑄瞭史學傢對該事件的看法，故而曆史敘述乃是蘊藉著詩心的構型，一種神話化的過程。曆史學和曆史哲學的相似性大於差異，皆需從特殊提煉普遍以便整閤成綜閤論述，不存在相對性錶述；而在淺層的錶現底下隱含著潛在的、富有比喻意味的意義；曆史話語類型的區分取決於其選擇的語言形態和修辭(如隱喻、轉喻、提喻、反諷等)。
