更像是Forster一個人的musing而非任何成係統的理論。說是史上最偉大的non-fiction太過名副其實，不過對於理解小說（和寫小說）還是有些養分的

1927年，劍橋英語係學生的文學入門講座。Forster誌得意滿地徐徐講述，沒有晦澀的理論，例證的小說也都是當時流行的讀本。對歐洲大陸文學的發展給予頗高的一席之地。19世紀末20世紀初文壇的各種暗流湧動，Joyce以及Henry.J。語言是簡單的，思路是清晰的，放到現在雖然不能當作嚴肅的論文參考，卻能藉得一瞥那個文學再度復興的時代。『喜歡這種教授亦作傢的風範。可以分析彆人也可以自己下筆行文，方知理論並非空談，批評也是為更好的藝術創作而服務。History develops, art stands still. 這一點，確實至今無人能辯。
