With the rise of science, we moderns believe, the world changed irrevocably, separating us forever from our primitive, premodern ancestors. But if we were to let go of this fond conviction, Bruno Latour asks, what would the world look like? His book, an anthropology of science, shows us how much of modernity is actually a matter of faith. What does it mean to be modern? What difference does the scientific method make? The difference, Latour explains, is in our careful distinctions between nature and society, between human and thing, distinctions that our benighted ancestors, in their world of alchemy, astrology, and phrenology, never made. But alongside this purifying practice that defines modernity, there exists another seemingly contrary one: the construction of systems that mix politics, science, technology, and nature. The ozone debate is such a hybrid, in Latour's analysis, as are global warming, deforestation, even the idea of black holes. As these hybrids proliferate, the prospect of keeping nature and culture in their separate mental chambers becomes overwhelming--and rather than try, Latour suggests, we should rethink our distinctions, rethink the definition and constitution of modernity itself. His book offers a new explanation of science that finally recognizes the connections between nature and culture--and so, between our culture and others, past and present. Nothing short of a reworking of our mental landscape. "We Have Never Been Modern" blurs the boundaries among science, the humanities, and the social sciences to enhance understanding on all sides. 从科技史和物出发的拉图尔，还是觉得有些故弄玄虚。现代制度里人们总要从hybriditiy里纯化自己的研究对象/处理对象，比如波义尔的自然和霍布斯的社会。而后现代就是在自然和社会不断拉大的距离里，迷失的语言、符号系统。

这本书很完整的揭示了现代性的产生，内部的问题，可能的批判，以及未来的方向，对西方的现代性完成了一个祛魅的过程，作者想要告诉我们的是，一个更加优越的社会并没有真正存在过，现代性在不断强调自身对自然与社会的两极区分的同时，遮蔽了两极之间的存在，也忽视了中间世界的动力作用，而事实上它同一个原始社会并没有本质上的不同，同样都是在两极的杂合中存在的。我觉得第三部分和第四部分还是挺难理解的，可能需要多看几遍。

translation purification 中间开始跳了，然后结了一下尾.......反正硬啃就算看懂了句子也消化不了。挺有意思的（意思就是以后还要再翻）。句式挺简单的，单词没概念，整体再回味（意思就是自己建构illusion）——给个动力，就是把这书庸俗化成英语阅读材料。
