從Romulus到Caracalla，國王（酋邦）時代到共和體製，內戰後迎接Caesar的時代，最終在羅馬公民改革中戛然而止。可讀性非常強的專欄曆史。皇帝個性的差異隻會影響少數精英人群，而與屠戮僅一綫之隔的平民生活理應更有曆史研究的價值。作者圍繞SPQR有意避開連篇纍牘的帝王傳記，轉而展開羅馬人民和社會底層的敘述，可惜曆史終究是勝利者和統治者書寫的，相關的史料隻在三四個章節中涵蓋，關於元老院本身的描繪也比預期少瞭很多。

太精彩瞭，曆史太好玩瞭！研究瞭五十多年的人纔能用如此通俗易懂的語言把曆史的精髓寫得淋灕盡緻吧。這麼大部頭啃完都意猶未盡。Mary Beard本人的瀟灑也很加分233333
