But since it's set in the 1950s, lingering memories of World War II, internment camps and racism helps fuel suspicion of a Japanese-American fisherman, a lifelong resident of the islands. It's a great story, but the primary pleasure of the book is Guterson's renderings of the people and the place.

A short story but with plenty of details. First time I can get the beauty of English.

想不到這本書居然還寫得很好，整個故事引人入勝。雖然很大成分上是法庭戲genre的功勞，但作者寫得這種多視角敘事也很帥。愛情還是挺感人的，人物刻畫也好。另外，介紹西北這種鮮為人知的人文事故也不錯，感受日本人受到的不公正也有意義。但問題也不是沒有，比如文筆隻是中上，整個故事很情節劇，性描寫太多、而且不必要等。不過說的上是娛樂，很快就看完瞭。

在原版的評論裏找到瞭不少共鳴，也是我看原版的感受。中文翻譯版那邊是一邊倒的好評，估計翻譯美輪美奐。原版實在太太太太太太囉嗦瞭，作者對捕魚業和種植業絕對有執念，一個船的樣子一種海上天氣一塊草莓地能寫一篇散文齣來。最突齣的愛情故事也是雞湯畫風，但還是瞭解到二戰前後日裔美國人的一些曆史，故事也是巧閤地設定在西雅圖附近的島上。想到在西雅圖的時候，我們坐在市中心某高端餐廳，美國客戶告訴我們，“西雅圖市中心這塊地全是日本人的”，看完書現在大概知道瞭這種事的來龍去脈。
