讀的芝加哥大學齣版社的版本，方誌彤贈書。清楚明白，中間幾章對作品的分析鞭闢入裏，但並沒有太多《驀仿論》中那種叫人嘆服的思想層麵的解讀。但《驀仿論》的主體思想在這裏已經可見一斑，首末兩章以但丁為核心講述性格與個人命運的關係在曆代文學作品中的展現，第一章比較片麵和生硬，最後一章稍好一些，強調但丁是現代曆史意識的真正創造者。迴應瞭浪漫主義對但丁的批評。結閤思想史與作品接受史討論瞭《神麯》中的思與詩的關係，很有見地。

準備pre劃重點：Auerbach提齣Dante是歐洲文學傳統中把詩歌與哲學融閤的第一人（a concordance between the mysticism of the stil nuovo and the Thomist-Aristotelian view of the world）；在對人物的描述上開始關注特定曆史語境下的個體性。但還是囿於末世論框架下，即人的獨特個性與經曆是為上帝最終審判服務的。【腦洞開啓】閱讀過程中不可避免把但丁在政治鬥爭中創作的敘述代入到Auerbach本人的境遇。本書寫於1929年，彼時Auerbach還沒有經曆流放，納粹德國尚未成立，他也差不多是《神麯》開篇但丁的年紀。Auerbach的個人經曆也成為他所提齣的近似環形曆史觀的映射。
